Numerical simulation of multi-species biofilms in porous media for different kinetics
نویسندگان
چکیده
There are bacteria that can form strong biofilms in porous media. These biofilms can be used as biobarriers to restrict the flow of pollutants. For certain contaminants, a second species of bacteria that can actually react with the contaminants can be added to the biobarrier to actually degrade the pollutants. We propose some mathematical models for the formation of these reacting biobarriers under different hypotheses, and numerically solve the resulting equations for the flow, transport and reactions. Qualitative comparisons with some experimental results are also given.

Numerical Modelling of Porous Radiant Burners Using Full and Reduced Kinetics Mechanisms
The present paper compares full kinetics mechanisms in numerical modelling of porous radiant burners (PRB), with their reduced forms. The two most frequently used mechanisms of methane combustion (GRI3.0 and Miller) were selected and their effects were examined on temperature, species concentration, burning speed, and pollutant emission. While the findings of numerical simulation of PRB sho...
متن کاملExperimental Investigation of the Permeability and Inertial Effect on Fluid Flow through Homogeneous Porous Media
The value of the permeability in fluid flow through porous media is important for process investigation. In low Reynolds number, the classic Darcy’s law is suitable for simulation of fluid flow. In this paper, an experimental study for evaluation of preformed fiber permeability has been done. Also, the deviations from the classical Darcy law by experimental and numerical simulation of the N...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation and Estimation of the Transvers Macrodispersivity Coefficient of Aqueous Phase (Miscible) Contaminants of Salt Water in a Heterogeneous and Homogeneous Porous Media
Deterioration of groundwater resources in coastal regions due to the progression of saline water in aquifers in these regions is currently one of the important issues in providing water needs in these areas. In coastal regions, saline water enters the aquifer from below in shape of wedge. Due to the difference in the density between fresh and salty water, an interface zone forms between two flu...
متن کاملAbsolute Permeability Calculation by Direct Numerical Simulation in Porous Media
Simulating fluid flow at micro level is an ongoing problem. Simplified macroscopic flow models like Darcy’s law is unable to estimate fluid dynamic properties of porous media. The digital sample reconstruction by high resolution X-ray computed tomography scanning and fluid-dynamics simulation, together with the increasing power of super-computers, allow to carry out pore-scale simulations throu...
متن کاملAccurate Numerical Simulation of Biobarrier Formation in Porous Media
Biofilm-forming microbes have complex effects on the flow properties of natural porous media. Subsurface biofilms have the potential for biotransformation of organic contaminants to less harmful forms, and also to form biobarriers to inhibit contaminant migration in groundwater. To describe the population distribution and movement of bacteria in porous media, we consider the convection-dispersi...
